A recent revelation by American actor John Travolta in court testimony during an ongoing extortion case in The Bahamas that his late son Jett suffered from autism, has stirred debate and controversy over the disease. News media and critics have questioned whether Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston should have acknowledged Jett’s illness sooner. In response to comments made Tuesday about the recent events on the ABC television program The View, the National Autism Association issued a press release stating they “very much support the Travolta family and all families affected by autism”.

My son was autistic and suffered from seizure disorder.

Travolta’s testimony last week admitting that his son was autistic was the first time he had stated as much publicly; previously he and his wife had only said Jett had experienced Kawasaki syndrome. Travolta’s son Jett died in January 2009 at the age of 16 after experiencing a seizure. “My son was autistic and suffered from seizure disorder. Every five to ten days he suffered seizures which lasted 45 seconds to a minute,” said Travolta in his court testimony on September 22. A piece in iVillage noted Travolta had been pressured for years to speak out publicly about his son Jett’s autism. iVillage cited a 2007 piece in the New York Post, where a source commented “He could do so much good for autism awareness if he would just come forward.”

News media and critics have suggested that Travolta and his wife’s allegiance to Scientology was behind their rationale for not previously acknowledging that Jett was autistic. The Church of Scientology opposes psychiatry and does not recognize autism as an affliction. Church representative Tommy Davis had told MSNBC that “The Church of Scientology has no position on autism,” however a Scientology-founded organization the Citizens Commission On Human Rights stated to the United States Senate in 2008: “The Citizens Commission on Human Rights believes that there is no known medical treatment for autism except off-label drugs.”

Former Scientologists Tory Christman and Claire Headley were interviewed about the recent revelation by Travolta for The Daily Beast, and commented on its implications. Christman suffers from epilepsy, a condition which also causes seizures. She told The Daily Beast that the Church of Scientology pressured her to go off of her seizure medications, and instead take “vitamins and supplements”. After doing so, Christman experienced a grand mal seizure and knocked out two of her teeth in the bathroom. Headley, who has filed a lawsuit against Scientology for labor-law violations, told The Daily Beast that the only techniques that Scientology would have sanctioned to help Jett would have been internal procedures known as “assists and objective processing”. Church representative Tommy Davis responded to The Daily Beast: “This religion is utterly and completely about helping. It’s just insane to think that Scientology would be a factor in somebody not getting all the help they need.”

Everybody handles autism in the best way that they can and for whatever personal reasons they had, they chose not to make it public.

ABC News reported Tuesday that the president of the National Autism Association (NAA), Wendy Fournier, stated those that had experience with autism awareness had previously recognized signs from media video that Jett Travolta suffered from the disease. Fournier commented: “It didn’t really come as a surprise for people. But I’ve read some things that really bother me – basically that they should have come forward sooner. Everybody handles autism in the best way that they can and for whatever personal reasons they had, they chose not to make it public. Just because you have a child with autism and you’re a celebrity, it does not automatically mandate you to be a spokesperson for the disorder.” Another official from the autism community, the national manager for Talk About Curing, Autism Rebecca Estepp, said to ABC News: “The Travoltas are suffering right now from a tragedy that could affect anyone. … We’ve heard of several children passing away with seizures lately.”

On Tuesday’s edition of the ABC television program The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg commented on the statements made by the representative of the National Autism Association to ABC News about Travolta’s admission of his son’s autism. “Since John Travolta has testified his son Jett was autistic in this blackmail case, the National Autism Association has come out saying they didn’t expect him to be a celebrity spokesperson for autism, but he should have come forward sooner,” said Goldberg.

The View co-hosts proceeded to discuss whether Travolta should have publicly revealed his son’s ailment earlier, and the impact of labels in society and the media. Sherri Shepherd commented on the negative impact of labeling individuals, and guest-host Gloria Estefan remarked: “I don’t like labels, period.” “I guess what is stunning to me is that anyone has the right to expect you to say anything about your family,” said Goldberg.

“Isn’t it partly that he’s a Scientologist and that there’s a reputation that Scientologists don’t believe in diseases of certain kinds?” asked co-host Joy Behar. Goldberg asserted that it was the individual’s decision whether or not to speak publicly about such an issue. Shepherd pointed out that celebrity actress Jenny McCarthy has spoken out publicly about autism, which her son suffers from, and noted that her voice has helped to focus public attention on the disease.

Behar questioned Travolta’s earlier statements that his son had Kawasaki disease: “The thing about Travolta though – he called it Kawasaki disease. Did he know that it was autism, and just said it was Kawasaki – was he making that up? I don’t know.” Goldberg said: “This is not the way to get people to come out and say, ‘You know what, I’m going to take a stand.’ It’s just, it’s none of your business until somebody wants to make it your business, but that’s just me.

As a nation, we need to instead focus on helping those affected by autism, which now affects 1 in 100 children.

After the program’s broadcast, the National Autism Association came out with a press release Tuesday, in response to statements made on The View. “The National Autism Association stated today that they very much support the Travolta family and all families affected by autism”, said the press release. The NAA clarified that the statement made to ABC News by its president Wendy Fournier was the opposite position of that quoted by Goldberg, asserting that it was taken out of context. “I agree with Ms. Goldberg, the Travoltas, like any other family struggling with the illness of their child, are entitled to their privacy. I have read hurtful, judgmental comments from individuals as well as organizations, suggesting that that the Travolta family owed it to the autism community to use their celebrity to bring awareness to the disorder. I couldn’t disagree more,” said Fournier.

The organization’s board chair, Lori McIlwain, commented in the press release: “NAA is here to support families and fellow parents. This debate does not serve anyone. As a nation, we need to instead focus on helping those affected by autism, which now affects 1 in 100 children.” According to the release, the organization was founded in 2003, and is one of the largest in the United States. The NAA’s mission includes educated families about autism and neurological disorders.

Cleveland, Ohio-based University Hospitals Case Medical Center child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Marcie Hall said that according to studies one fourth of autistic children may concurrently have seizure disorder. The director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Management Center at New York City’s Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Shlomo Shinnar, stated: “In neurologically-normal children with epilepsy, the risk of death is actually no different than for children without seizures.”

In the world of fitness, half-truths can be dangerous to your health and wellbeing. When you follow these fitness myths, there’s an all-too real possibility that you could injure yourself. Thus, it’s important to be able to determine which exercise tip you hear is true and which ones aren’t. Here are the most common half-truths that you should be wary about:

Myth No.1: Crunches will get rid of belly fat.

This is the most common myth that has long been debunked, but surprisingly keeps on making a comeback. It just doesn’t die! Spot-reduction is a myth because you can’t choose areas of your body in which to zap away fat. If you want to get rid of belly fat, you have to reduce your overall body fat through cardiovascular exercise. Once you’ve already rid yourself of excess pounds, you can tone your ab muscles through various strength training exercises. But crunches alone won’t do a thing to rid you of that bulging midsection.

Myth No. 2: If you don’t sweat, you’re not working hard enough.

Breaking up a sweat isn’t a good indicator of the efficacy of your workout. You sweat because your body needs to cool itself. You can derive benefits from exercises that don’t really make you sweat. An easy walk, light weight-training exercise or some stretching activities do not make you sweat but can do wonders for your overall health and fitness.

Myth No. 3: If you don’t feel sore, you’re not working hard enough.

This is similar to the second fitness myth. Like sweat, some fitness buffs equate the muscle soreness they feel after a workout as a determinant to its success. While muscular discomfort is common after an exercise regimen, feeling it for days after a workout means that something is wrong with how you are conducting your exercise. Since tears in the muscle fibers are the cause of soreness, you are probably overtraining and putting yourself at a risk for injury. In weight training, especially, you have to allow your muscles time to rest and recover so it can grow. Soreness can be prevented if you do warm up stretches before the main workout itself. If you feel sore after an exercise, rest for a day and do the same exercise afterwards at a lower intensity. If the discomfort still persists, ask an expert to see if something is wrong with your technique or form while doing an exercise. Pain while doing a routine, on the other hand, necessitates that you stop an exercise and see your doctor.

Myth No. 4: Weight training makes women bulky.

This is what scares women away from training with those dumbbells. The truth of the matter is, women don’t have the testosterone levels that could make them bulk up when they do train with weights. Moreover, it takes years of regular weight training with very heavy weights for bodybuilders to bulk up the way we see them in Mr. Universe titles.

Myth No. 5: If you can’t do a full workout, you might as well not exercise.

This is the fitness myth that lazy individuals would like to consider as gospel truth. Experts will tell you that some activity is better than no activity at all. You don’t have to go to the gym to get the benefits of exercise. Dancing, running after your toddler, walking up and down the stairs– all these will get your heart rate up and give you a host of other physical and psychological benefits.

Seven weeks after citizens of the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve repossessed land near Caledonia, Ontario, on February 28, the Ontario Provincial Police, who have authority from a court to arrest the protesters for contempt of court, have yet to act.

On April 11, more than 50 police cruisers, two paddy wagons, and several vans gathered outside an abandoned school on Unity Road in Caledonia. However, reports from last night are that visible police presence is minimal, with just a few police cruisers parked down the road from the protest site.

Before the site was blocked, Henco Industries had begun construction on 10 luxury homes out of a total of 71 scheduled to be built as part of the $6 million Douglas Creek Estates subdivision.

The tract of land under dispute was registered as a land claim by the Six Nations Band Council in 1987 but its status has yet to be settled. The land originally made up part of a large land grant given in 1784 to the Six Nations for services rendered during the American War of Independence. The government and the developer claim that the Six Nations surrendered title in 1841, but the Band disputes this.

The protesters are demanding a nation-to-nation dialogue with the Canadian government and continue to call for a peaceful resolution. Some protesters, however, have stated that if the OPP forcefully try to remove them, they will defend their land with force.

“If they break the peace, we’ll do what we have to do,” said protester Dick Hill. “Things are very tense. We are trying to defend our lands, which were taken from us. Every time we try to stand up for who we are and what we are, they come and drag us away.”

An injunction was issued to the development company a month ago that allowed for the protesters to be removed. Police have not enforced the injunction.

However, David Ramsay, Ontario’s Aboriginal Affairs Minister, said that the province was going to have a meeting with both protesters and developers in an attempt to address their concerns.

“This is a very serious situation. I have to be very hopeful that we’re going to see a peaceful end to this situation. We think we can resolve this by negotiating, and by talking so that’s what we’re doing,” added Ramsay.

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Canopy Tents, Portable Shelters and Heavy Duty Tarps

by

James Conencticut

Whether it is a canopy black screen kit, peak style instant garage or a pop-up canopy, having portable shelters or tents is beneficial to any homeowner. With these products, you can instantly create a safe environment for you, your family and friends, your garage equipment, machinery, and your vehicles.

People

One of the main purposes of a portable shelter or canopy tent is to provide protection for people. They make for a great substitute for traditional canvas covers since they are easier to setup. With a fixed leg pop up canopy, like those sold on Global Industrial, you will be able to create a temporary shelter for you and your family or friends instantly. And, as easily as you can set them up, you can also easily dismantle your portable tent or shelter to store in your car or garage.

This is a great solution for whenever you decide to go on a camping trip or an afternoon picnic. They are also great for use in fairs and barbecues as well. Not only can they provide you with protection from the harmful rays of the sun, but they will keep you dry as well during the rain.

Equipment and vehicles

A portable garage or garage kit on the other hand gives you that much needed car space. Whether for home or for outside, these things can help protect your car or SUV from the sun and rain. Other than that, you can also store your boat, jet ski, or any other vehicle that you have in mind. These things are great alternatives to having a permanent garage built because they are cheaper. And, you can also use garage kits when you go out-of-town or on camping trips to keep your vehicle safe and sound.

If you need to store equipment or supplies, then portable sheds as well as storage shelters are for you. For example, if you are constructing something and it suddenly rains, wouldn’t it be great to have a place to store them until the weather gets better? That’s exactly what portable sheds and storage shelters offer you. Aside from supplies, you can also keep your equipment and/or tools in these things as well.

Whether you are getting a garage kit or a portable shed, you can rest assure that your vehicle, machine, or your supplies would be safe. These covers have been treated in such a way that they can resist water, UV and even microbes that can cause excessive damage.

Plants and Animals

Even your plants and animals can greatly benefit from Global Industrial covers. For one, you can find portable greenhouses for your plants. These products can help you take care of your plants by keeping them warm. Because of this, you can extend your planting season by up to six weeks. When winter comes, you can simply pack it up and store it in your garage.

Your animals on the other hand can benefit from portable kennels. These covers give them protection from the outside elements while keeping them in one location. Because of the wire mesh design, you can easily look after them. It also provides proper ventilation for your animals.

Tarps

When it comes to versatility, heavy duty tarps is probably the most versatile of all covers. They are light and easy to use. At the same time, these things are very durable as they are designed to last for years on end.

Durability

In choosing your portable shelter or canopy tent, you have to consider a few things first. The main one is durability. You need to be sure that not only will the cover be able to do what it should do, but it should also last for a long time.

Portability

Being portable is another huge factor since you know you can bring it almost anywhere that you need it. At the same time, storage will not be a huge problem since you can simply put it in your garage after you are done with the cover.

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

The Bremer Freimarkt (Free Fair) — historically one of the oldest fairs in Germany — has its greatest event with the Free Fair Procession “Freimarktsumzug”; this year’s Freimarktsumzug took place Saturday.

The procession started Saturday morning on the opposite side of the river Weser in the “Neustadt” and passed the city hall about one hour later. 146 colorfully decorated groups were taking part, some of them dancing to their own music, and were watched by about 200.000 people in the streets during more than four hours of the whole performance. The event could also be viewed on television and on livestream on the web.

The Free Fair opened on the place behind the main station of the city of Bremen a week ago. The origin of this popular event can be traced back to the year 1035. Nowadays it has been called the “biggest Fairground Festival in northern Germany”.

For a few years, an historical spectacle involving actors of the theatre group Shakespeare Company has been part of the opening performance of the fair. With a replica of an old cog an ambassador enters the banks of the river Weser close to the city and walks with his companions to the market place in front of the city hall of Bremen where the Kleiner Freimarkt (Small Free Fair) is opened. Members of the Chimney Sweep Guild hang up a big heart at the statue of Roland as a sign of the opened market. The traditional opening takes place in the Bavarian tent on the Bürgerweide behind the main station of Bremen with the tapping of the first keg by the incumbent Senator of the Interior of the Free Hansetown of Bremen. This is followed by the dance with Miss Free Market on the stage. Late at night, also fireworks are lighted over the place Bürgerweide and can be admired by people. The exclamation Ischa Freimaak (It’s Free Fair) is meant to spread a relaxed and unreserved atmosphere among the guests.

The fair is a major source of revenue for showmen, carousels and food stalls, some of which arrived nearly two weeks before the opening from all over Germany. This year the Freimarkt is to last until Sunday November 4. The subsequent disassembly, especially the technically complex rides, should then take about ten days.

Go Further Beyond – Spain

by

merillmayden

When it comes to Spain, we always think of bull fighter, bull running, pirates and anything romantic and adventurous. However, you may not know the origin of this kind of Spanish personality, which can be seen from the country s motto “Plus Ultra” which means Further Beyond .

According to the research of the author of The Palace of Charles V in Granadal, Earl Rosenthal, the motto has something to do with the Pillars of Hercules which is located near the Straits of Gibraltar. Besides, according to Greek mythology, it was built by Hercules who is the son of Jupiter. The reason why he built the pillars was to mark the edge of the then known world and thus words None plus ultra, “nothing further beyond” acted as a warning to sailors and navigators to not go further.

Therefore, the original version of the motto is Nec plus ultra . Then, it is believed that Plus ultra which means Further Beyond was at first the personal motto of Charles V, who was as Carlos I of Spain, of the Spanish Empire from 1516 and the Holy Roman Emperor from 1519. He got it from his doctor who tried to persuade him not to be restrained by the ancient warning and encourage him to take the risk and go further beyond.

When Charles V became the ruler of many different parts of Europe and colonies all over the world, his personal motto was then transcended by his people.

The motto became more popular all over Spain in the early 16th century when Charles V became king of both Aragon and Castile. Naturally, Plus ultra became the national motto and even was featured on the Spanish dollar. It was at that time to be used to encourage Spanish people to go further beyond the Pillars of Hercules and to find the New World.

It was also used as the personal motto of the great English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author: Sir Francis Bacon. In addition, a lot of institutions varying from secondary school to college such as Jurong Junior College in Singapore and Malden Catholic High School in Massachusetts adopted it as their motto as well.

Plus ultra was also be used as names of different things. For example, a seaplane named the Plus Ultra in 1926 when a crew of Spanish aviators made a Trans-Atlantic flight successfully. In the most recent time, a troop served in the Iraq War was named the Plus Ultra Brigade which consisting of 2,500 personnel from Spain, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????.
