The rescue of the Chilean miners trapped in the San José Mine in Copiapó, codenamed Operación San Lorenzo (San Lorenzo Operation), began on Tuesday night, at around 20:00 local time (23:00 UTC).

Florencio Ávalos was the first miner to be rescued, at 00:12 local time (03:12 UTC) on Wednesday. He was wearing a shirt signed by all his fellow miners. “The first miner is already with us. We saw it all, him hugging his wife Monica and his son Byron,” said President Piñera shortly after the first rescue. “We still have a long journey.”

“This will be recorded on every single Chilean heart forever,” Piñera added. “I hope the miners’ hope stay with us, just like the [February] earthquake victims’ [hope] and what the earthquake took off. We know that the disasters unite us all.”

All the 33 miners were rescued. The last miner, Luis Urzúa, was rescued at 21:55 Chile time (00:55 UTC). “It is a pleasure to be Chilean, [I’m] proud,” said Luis Urzúa to President Piñera. “In honour of the miners, their families, the rescuers […] let’s sing our national anthem. Viva Chile Mierda!,” said Piñera. Urzúa thanked Mining Minister Golborne and the First Lady Cecilia Morel for “fighting for their lives.” “I’m proud of my fellow miners,” Urzúa added.

Six rescuers, including a miner and a paramedic, descended to the miners’ shelter using the Fénix 3 capsule which was specially constructed for the rescue. They performed check-ups and talk with the miners before taking them back to the surface. The rescuers still don’t leave the mine.

The Fénix 3 capsules are 3.95 metres in height and weigh about 460 kilograms. They have an armour, an oxygen tube and a microphone. The occupants helmets contain an intercom to keep them in contact with the rescue team on the surface.

President of Chile Piñera assisted to the rescue. Bolivian President Evo Morales could not attend Carlos Mamani’s rescue. Mamani is the only Bolivian miner in the group.

A mass for the miners was conducted at 18:00 local time (21:00 UTC). The rescue takes between 15 and 20 minutes for each miner.

On Tuesday, Mayor of Copiapó Maglio Cicardini announced that the municipal schools in the city will have no classes this Wednesday “to transform the rescue of the Atacama’s 33 in a familiar meeting,” Radio Cooperativa reported.

“The miners will be taken to the Copiapó Regional Hospital for medical checkup, where they will have to stay for 48 hours,” Health Minister Mañalich said to Televisión Nacional de Chile.

Celebrations are taking place in several Chilean cities. In Santiago de Chile, people gathered in one of the most important points of the city, Plaza Italia. In Pichilemu, tens of cars are passing over its most important streets. In Copiapó, people gathered in its main square to assist a massive concert.

On August 5, 33 miners were trapped more than 700 meters (2,300 ft) underground, in the San José copper–gold mine, located about 40 kilometers north of Copiapó, Chile.

The youngest trapped miner is 19 years old, and the oldest is 63. There were several rescue attempts before reaching the miners’ shelter on August 22. The National Emergencies Office of Chile (ONEMI) released a list of the trapped miners on August 6, which included Franklin Lobos Ramírez, a retired footballer.

Chile is the worlds top producer of copper, according to The Economist. The San José Mine is owned by the San Esteban Mining Company (Empresa Minera San Esteban). The mine was closed down in 2007, after relatives of a miner who had died sued the company executives, but the mine was re–opened in 2008.

It was originally estimated that “it would take three to four months to complete the rescue of the trapped miners”. There were three plans to reach the miners: “Plan A” using a Strata 950 drill, “Plan B” using a Schramm T130XD drill, and “Plan C” using a RIG-422 drill. The first to reach the miners was “Plan B”, early on Saturday 9.

The last step of their rescue, announced by Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, was originally due to begin on Tuesday. Laurence Golborne, Minery Minister said “If it is possible, and the cement sets before and we don’t have any impediments to doing it, it would be wonderful,” in a press conference on Monday. The men will be extracted in a steel rescue capsule 54 cm (21 inches) in diameter.

On September 4, Chilean filmmaker Rodrigo Ortúzar announced plans to film a movie about the accident, called “Los 33” (“The 33”). The film will be released in 2011.

One miner is Bolivian, and the other 32 are Chilean.

Raúl Bustos, 40 years old, is an hydraulics engineer. He left his job in Talcahuano after the February 27 earthquake to work in the mine.

Daniel Herrera, 27 years old, is a lorry driver. He has acted as paramedic assistant in the mine. He said to La Tercera “the miners were unhappy with the psychologist in the rescue team.”

Claudio Acuña, miner, is fan of the Colo-Colo football club. The BBC reports he is aged 56, but El Comercio says he is 44.

*SUFFOLK*

In eastern England, farmers developed a breed of heavy draft horses, called the Suffolk Punch. This breed is little known to Americans, yet the horse probably has many qualities that appearl to an American breeder than some of the well known breeds of draft horses.

Not surprisingly, the homeland of Suffolk horses was Suffolk county, as well as Norfolk county. The areas were isolated from the neighbors by the North Sea and the Fens, so the farmers of Suffolk developed the breed to meet their specific lifestyles. They plowed heavy clay soil, and so needed a breed of horse that was strong, healthy, and had great stamina. The horses were used to harvest the farmers land, and they rarely had extra horses to sell. This is how the breed kept it’s purity, but also how the breed is so unknown. The Suffolk is the oldest draft breeds, with records that date back to 1880.

Suffolk horses are very large, and they’re symmetrical with their colors. The legs are strong and short, and they have excellent feet that can be shod or unshod. Their heads appear intelligent, with strong, arching necks. They stand about 16.1 hands, but some are larger. They have a great disposition and easy temperment. suffolk’s are willing to work and have great endurance.

*TAISHUH*

A riding and light draft horse originating on the Tsu Island of Japan, the taishuh breed is ancient and dates back to about the eighth century. In 1920, there were 4,000 Taishuh; but now under 100 remain.

The breed is strong and rugged, with very sturdy legs. They are gentle and willing to obey, making them the perfect ponies for farmers wives and children.

*TARPAN*

A prehistoric, wild horse type, Tarpans lived in souther France and Spain, and into central Russia. There have been cave drawings of Tarpan horses found in France and Spain. The breed is extinct.

*TAWLEED*

Developed in the Khartoum region of Sudan, the Tawleed breed is a riding horse. It was developed from the crossing of Sudan Country Bred horses with Thoroughbred.

*TENNESSEE WALKING HORSE*

A unique breed was created over one hundred years ago in teneessee. It was called the Tennessee Walking Horse. Early settlers to the region came from the Carolinas, Virginia and other nearby states, bringing with them Morgans, Standardbreds, Canadian, Narrangansett Pacers and Thoroughbreds. When all the horse families were combined, the Tennessee Walker was developed, along with some distinctive qualities of their own.

As the name suggests, the most obvious characteristic of the Tennessee Walking horse is their walk. They have a swift walk, that is almost like running. It is not possible to teach a horse to walk like a Tennessee Walking Horse- they must be born with that trait. The walk is a four beat gait, with a bobbing head and a gliding motion, and their ears swing with each step! Some Walkers will even snap their teeth in time to their walk. Tennessee Walking HOrses travel at speeds between 6 and 12 miles an hour, and they can sustain the gait for long distances without problem or fatigue.

Tennessee Walkers also have two other gaits, called teh flat foot walk- which is a slow and even gate, and the canter- which is actually a refined gallop with an added rolling motion. The canter is graceful and rhythmic and sometimes referred to as teh rocking chair gait. Regardless of the type of gait the Tennessee Walker is performing, the rider will have a comfortable ride.

Tennessee Walkers were developed primarily for riding, farm work and driving. Plantation owners also used this breed to carry them miles over fields to inspect their crops.

Tennessee walkers are affectionate, intelligent and gentle. They come in brown, bay, black, roan and chestnut colors.

Tuesday, March 22, 2005Launched yesterday with funding for bandwidth and storage donated by Internet Archive, a new website called Ourmedia aspires to serve as a global repository for free content, which donors are encouraged to license for re-use by others.

Started by Internet Archive employee J.D. Lasica and Marc Canter, who founded Macromind, which became Macromedia, Ourmedia has a team of what Lasica refers to as “moderators” that will ensure that the site does not host pornography or copyrighted or defamatory materials. Their “Site rules” note that the moderators will be the “sole arbiters” of what will be hosted on the site.

Lasica and Canter have been working on the site with a cadre of volunteers since they met at a Supernova conference 9 months ago, according to Lasica’s blog. The site was started in the summer of 2004, and announced its official launch on March 21, 2005.

While the server initially hosting Ourmedia was not able to handle the load imposed when publicised on tech news sites such as Slashdot and BoingBoing (reported by ITConversations, among others), it has now been replaced and improved. According to a post on the Ourmedia blog, “The transition to a new dedicated server has been completed, the database configuration has been given an overhaul, and some of the code has been cleaned up.”

The software running Ourmedia is an open source content management system called Bryght, described at Bryght.com as “the Drupal core set of modules plus a set of contributed Drupal modules.” Ourmedia describes their system as being “alpha” quality; they note that because all of the media files on their site are being hosted by the Internet Archive, users will need to register with both sites with the same username and password until the registration systems are unified.

On Wednesday, various cities in the Indian state of Karnataka observed Karnataka Bandh ((en))English language: ?Karnataka closed, as people protested for central government to sort out the dispute of water share for the Mandovi river, also known as Mahadayi, which has been going on for decades. Bus service in Karnataka’s capital Bangalore was at a complete halt, however, the bandh was not strictly followed in southern parts of Karnataka, including in Mysore.

The 77 kilometer (about 48 mile) river originates in northern Karnataka, and flows through Goa. Almost two thirds of the river’s length is in Goa. Requests for 7.6 billion cubic feet (about 175,000 acre-feet) of river water to be released to Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad and Gadag districts were made by Karnataka government for seventeen years. There were plans for Karnataka to build canals for storing water for those four districts, which are prone to drought, which were stopped by judge JN Panchal in July 2016, asserting the affects on environment.

As a result of bandh, various schools and colleges announced a holiday, and Bangalore University postponed their exams. Deputy Commissioner Ramprasath Manohar said, “Schools and colleges in Ballari district of Karnataka will remain closed in the light of the state-wide bandh called by the pro-Kannada organisations and farmers’ welfare associations”.

Indian Medical Association wore a black band for the support, as the medical services we not interrupted in Banglaore, nor were auto-rickshaw services. Hotels remained open at some places. Movie cinemas and malls were also to stay closed.

Kannada actor Prakash Raj uploaded a video on Twitter saying, “First of all, all political parties must stop politicising it. We Kannadigas have a right over the water that flows past Kalasa Banduri. In a democracy, once a political party comes to power, it is no longer just a political party, but a party that is duty-bound to work for the people it represents. Any party that keeps saying — ‘our party is ruling at the Centre, so we will take the water through political means’ — is telling a blatant lie. This is a pro-people agitation. Please don’t do politics over people’s fundamental rights. My request to all parties — please leave your political ideologies aside, put aside these attempts to beg for votes. We must come together and stand together to put pressure for our rightful share in the water. Let’s agitate and ensure our rights are given to us.”

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) claimed the timing of the bandh was a political ploy to distract from party president Amit Shah’s scheduled rally on the same day in Mysore.

Vatal Nagaraj, who heads the pro-Kannada umbrella group Kannada Okoota which called the bandh, thanked public and private organisations for their observance of the bandh and claimed it was “total” across Karnataka. He said he visited different parts of the city Thursday morning.

Speaking to Press Trust of India, Deryk Natto, the managing director of Goa’s state bus service Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited, said, “The services to Karnataka have been suspended for a day due to the strike called by them. The services will resume once the strike is called off”. 23 buses bound to Karnataka were suspended.

Due to the strikes, traffic in Bangalore was lesser than usual. Unlike the case with buses, Namma Metro service in Bengaluru was functioning. A spokesperson of the metro service said, “If and only if there is a hindrance to safety of the passengers, we will inform the police and stop services.” Police arrested protestors at the KSR Bangalore Railway station who attempted to disrupt the railway facilities. 15000 police officials were assigned for security measures in Bangalore alone.

In Mysore, a number of shops were open at 10:30 AM, and there was usual traffic. Pharmaceutical shops remained open, however, some shops were closed. Protesters forced some shops to close, but classes in The National Institute of Engineering continued. Former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappafew said a few days ago, “We fully support the Mahadayi project. There is no need for a bandh. Bandh is only needed in the areas where people are suffering.”

A person from Mangalore told Wikinews there was no effect of bandh in Mangalore, and some restaurants and hotels had posters, which roughly translate, “We feel sorry that you do not have water. But stop hurting our livelihood by organisining these bandhs((kn))Kannada language: ?????? ??????? ???? ??????. ????? ??? ??? ???? ???? ???? ??????? ???? ????????! ? ???? ???? ?? ???? ??????????“.

A bandh is scheduled on February 4, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address a BJP rally in Bangalore.

Despite promises he would testify in his own corruption trial, lawyers for former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich rested their case yesterday morning. His defense did not call a single witness, and apparently feels the prosecution has not proven their case. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday.

Speculation that Blagojevich would not testify began on Tuesday, when U.S. District Judge James Zagel adjourned 90 minutes early after a private meeting with the lawyers involved. Robert Blagojevich, the former governor’s brother and co-defendant in the case, had already testified on his own behalf. Blagojevich’s defense team apparently considered resting their case on Tuesday, but Zagel gave them an extra day to consider their decision more carefully.

When Zagel directly asked the former governor about his decision, he replied that he understood what he was doing. “It is my decision, under the advice of my attorneys. I make the decision fully and voluntarily,” he said.

Blagojevich is charged with trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat that had been vacated by Barack Obama when he won the 2008 presidential election, among other crimes. Robert Blagojevich testified that his brother was trying to manipulate the political situation to his advantage, but emphasized that he engaged in nothing illegal. According to some sources, Blagojevich was interested in leading the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

An excavator is defined as any of a number of power-driven machines used to dig, move, and transport earth, gravel, etc. Excavators are used by builders, concrete contractors, paving companies, excavation crews and utility contractors just to name a few. These machines are designed to handle all of the hard, heavy jobs where men’s strength can’t be used. Places such as dams are built using these machines that specialize in digging and hauling away dirt and concrete. If someone where to try and rebuild a ancient monument such as the pyramid in Giza, an excavator would be the best building tool.

About Excavators

There are several Excavator brands on the market that vary in price and functionality. Prices for new excavators can reach well into six figures, weighing many tons. Do to the price, renting excavators isn’t an uncommon option. Buying used excavators isn’t uncommon either, which can be expected. For repaving your driveway or during other small constructions jobs to homes, renting is the best choice. Common excavator features may include an optional cab, rubber tracks, blade, air conditioning, and counterweight.

Excavators Brands

Below are a few manufactures of industrial use excavators and mini excavators;

BADGER, JOHN DEERE, NEW HOLLAND LTD., CATERPILLAR, KOBELCO/KOBE STEEL LTD,DAEWOO, KOEHRING, SAMSUNG, NEW HOLLAND,KOMATSU, TAKEUCHI MFG. CO. LTD., GEHL COMPANY, KUBOTA TRACTOR CORPORATION, VERMEER, GRADALL COMPANY, LIEBHERR, VOLVO CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT, HITACHI, LINK-BELT CONST., YANMAR, HYUNDAI, MELROE COMPANY and JCB

Excavators Uses

One of the many uses of excavators is digging for tree planting and removing excess dirt and debris. In addition to that they can be used to excavate large areas for construction. These machines come in very handy when it’s time to build and develop land as well. Its strength and power make moving extremely heavy objects simple and speed up the building process. Demolitions go rather quickly with excavators. As does digging out soil, excavation, loading up, sewers repair, demolishing, materials handling, recycling, elevating, destruction and construction site preparation.

Mini Excavators

Mini Excavators are merely compact sized excavators that perform the same functions as their larger, heavier counterparts. Other differences may include the depth at which the machine can dig, the amount of weight it can handle and the overall machine weight. Weights generally tend to be around two to six tons overall. Drive speeds are usually less than five miles per hour for excavators. Mini excavator gas tank sizes are predominately eighteen gallons

Excavator Fueling

You may think that the bigger the vehicle the lower fuel efficiency you’ll get. However, fuel efficiency of large excavators does play a role in the overall cost. The gas tank amount and the type of fuel the excavator needs determines fuel amounts. Diesel based fuel is almost always used for excavators no matter the size. Fuel efficiency is very important with any many and diesel is used because it burns slower than gas. Large size excavators can have up to a thirty six gallon tank for fuel.

Excavators Conclusion

As you can see from the above information, excavators provide a wide range of uses. Various brands, sizes, weights, fuel tank sizes and features need to be considered if you plan on buying or renting an excavator. Although they can be quite expensive to buy new or used and to rent, there is no substitute known that can perform the functions of these machines.

Sunday, February 13, 2005Cordon-bleu chef Homaru Cantu has announced a technique which allows him to create dishes made of edible, inkjet printed paper. Cantu, a head chef at the Moto restaurant in Chicago, has modified an ink-jet printer with the help of computer specialists from local firm Deep Labs and loaded it with cartridges containing concoctions of fruit and vegetables. Using this modified printer Cantu then prints onto edible sheets of soybean and potato starch tasty images downloaded from the web.

“You can make an ink-jet printer do just about anything,” says Cantu. Once the items have been printed they are dipped into a powder made of soy sauce, sugar and vegetables before then being further processed by frying, freezing, or baking them.

Cantu has applied the technique to the printing of menus so that diners can further flavor their soups by ripping up the menu and adding it to the dish.

He hopes that his idea may find its way into popular media. “Just imagine going through a magazine and looking at an ad for pizza. You wonder what it tastes like, so you rip a page out and eat it,” says the chef who is working at perfecting the flavors and has applied for a patent on the technique.

Cantu also has plans for further culinary innovations. He plans to cook steak using a handheld laser that will sear the inside of the steak well done whilst leaving the outside medium rare. He also plans to use the laser to produce bread baked from the inside out thus producing a crust on the inside.
